12-4 System: CONUA, others urge govt to tackle foundational challenges

The National President of the Congress of Nigeria University Academics (CONUA), Niyi Sunmonu, emphasized the need for consistency, commitment, and diligent execution in Nigeria’s education sector rather than frequent policy changes. He noted that effective implementation of policies strengthens the educational system and called for a critical examination of why the 6-3-3-4 system failed to meet expectations.

Sunmonu appreciated the Federal Government’s engagement with the National Council on Education but stressed the importance of involving other critical stakeholders to ensure data-driven insights guide any necessary modifications. He questioned why the 6-3-3-4 system did not achieve its goals, the reasons behind the shift to the 9-3-4 system, and any remaining gaps.

He highlighted the lack of infrastructure, skilled educators, and funding for vocational training as major reasons for the 6-3-3-4 system’s failure. Sunmonu argued that without addressing these foundational issues, another policy shift would only result in a change of structure without real progress. He believes that if the 6-3-3-4 system is properly funded, efficiently implemented, and aligned with modern skill demands, its outcomes could match global standards.
